The version 2 he's referring to does link to some graphics libraries,
but they don't automatically come into play (I haven't spent the time
to see why - noting that it wasn't a release version):

/usr/local/bin/links: => /lib/ (0x4001c000) => /usr/lib/ (0x40020000) => /lib/ (0x40026000)
        /lib/ => /lib/ (0x40000000) => /usr/local/lib/ (0x40110000)
/usr/local/bin/links2: => /usr/lib/ (0x40014000) => /usr/lib/ (0x40041000) => /usr/lib/ (0x40060000) => /lib/ (0x4008f000) => /usr/lib/ (0x40092000) => /lib/ (0x40098000) => /usr/lib/ (0x400b4000) => /usr/X11R6/lib/ (0x400fc000) => /lib/ (0x401b2000) => /usr/lib/ (0x4029c000)
        /lib/ => /lib/ (0x40000000) => /usr/local/lib/ (0x402ab000)

(I should add a comment about the misleading use of ncurses but haven't
found a suitable place for it ;-)

That's my impression. Though depending on the site, the same versions of
w3m and links will be treated differently - some sites decide that one or
the other of those are not capable of handling frames.
