SSL implementations can be completely interoperable and still completely
fail as a security measure. If anything this failure to realise that
problems that can't be easily seen compromise security is the main cause
of encryption breaches.
On the other hand, I think it might be possible to create incompatible
SSL implementations (e.g. because one only implements a patented algorithm
and the freeware one is unable to do so) that are both very secure.
