huh.  I hadn't changed that detail for a while.

        the chmod here is supposed to make it so we can successfully
        copy onto existing files.

        ...but here - I think is the problem (nothing is removing the
        existing link).  Will have to think about this (worked on
        Linux).  I assume this is Solaris?
