lynx-dev Avoiding line breaks while downloading gz

Yesterday I've had some unpleasant experience with lynx after having
downloaded a program: <ftp://kdstevens.com/pub/stevens/ispell.el.gz>.

The program did not compile, and I've lost some time before
discovering that the long lines are broken in a most straightforward
manner:

That is, "Inc." has produced an uncommented "nc" etc.

How can I avoid such a disservice in the future?
