Of course.  In an ideal worls, every display library would be
UTF-8 aware.

In an ideal world, UTF-8 capable versions of curses and slang
would be interface-compatible with previous versions.

(Feed C strings to addstr and friends as before - just that now they're
understood as UTF-8, so there must be sone switch to tell the lib -
don't require app to use any wide char functions.)

What is a 'driver', in this sense?

I haven't looked at your new ncurses code (and it seemed you
don't really encourage using it, at this point).
