I ran it from my home directory; the file was saved there.

perhaps the location of gzip changed (e.g., from /usr/local/bin to /usr/bin)
since you last configured/built?

Lynx has compiled-in the full pathname of the programs that it uses (that
can be overridden with the --disable-full-paths option).
