i was surprised: with other keys, Esc suppresses the following key:
eg Esc + a does no more than rewrite the status line,
whereas a asks if/how to add to the bookmark file.
the sequences which work use the 12 letters l to y , omitting n o .

yes: Esc stops a download, whereafter any character resumes;
of course, only during an actual download,
not when the odometer is flipping over after the fact.
