i downloaded the  tar.gz  file into a new subdirectory  ~/ld17
-- 2-8-1rel.1 is in  ~/lr1  -- & unpacked from there.
since no-one has any advice so far, i'll try again from scratch.
i must say i find editing  userdefs.h  &  lynx.cfg  a big PITA:
it's high time they were better organised
& much of the commentary moved to another help file.
