Thanks.  I haven't the expertise to have dealt with this readily.
I'll try putting "#ifndef __MVS__" around the "inline".

Should autoconf handle the availability of "inline", defining it
as nothing if unavailable?

    #ifdef __MVS__
    #define inline

Should inlines be macros where "inline" is unavailable?
