Sounds like you are using a shell account.  Are you by any chance using
the Microsoft terminal program, which is badly broken?

Corrupt displays are either flow control failures or the result of
telling a shell account that you are using one sort of terminal whilst
actually using a terminal that doesn't behave that way.  See man terminfo,
man termcap etc. and check your terminal emulator and TERM environment
variable settings.

Don't assume that everyone knows what software you and emrl are using.
