lynx-dev Link verification (akin to Traversal thread)

Reading one of the recent posts on -traversal issues led me to a question
that may or may not have been asked in the same (or similar) way:

I would like to occasionally put my (rather large) lynx_bookmarks.html
into a program/script/etc. that would produce another text specifying the
result of going to the link. In other words, whether it got to a page,
got a 404 error, etc. I was looking at the WGET page referenced from the
Links section at lynx.browser.org, and I am not quite sure if it would do
what I want.

My personal preference would be a text file that looks something like:

http://foo.bar.baz.com/topic/index.html OK
http://zing.bat.org/directory/access1.html 404:FILE NOT FOUND

but just about anything close to that would be of much help.

Would wget do something like this? Or should I be looking at a different
program/script?

(Being able to press a key in Lynx to do it on the page currently being
displayed would be VERY nice too... :) )
