980623 several people offerred helpful advice, for which thanx.

 nslookup  simply gives  chass.utoronto.ca ;
for  www.ft.com  it gives  194.196.73.41 , which is correct,
but using  whois  via  internic  gives  194.72.129.130 , which is not:
Network Solutions does say it's giving up on things soon.
 
setting  http_proxy  in  .login  works
(using  lynx.cfg  would mean recompiling nowadays with  configure ),
but since everything was back to normal high speed last night
i couldn't find out if it would have helped previously.

i would still like to learn why some IP addresses are dynamically assigned.
