Thank you for your detailed discussion of the various DPMI flavors.  I'm 
saving it for future reference.

I do think you may be a little too hard on DJGPP/CWSDPMI/etc.  After all,
if DJ and Charles Sandmann couldn't get copies of "TrueDPMI", how can we
expect them to have implemented it?  They wrote to the only standards
available, it seems to me.  Given a choice between having something
interoperable now, and waiting perhaps many years for Truth to be
revealed, I'd probably make the same decision.

I also wonder whether the infamous DPMI Committee is solely responsible
for the current state of affairs, since a full-blown Protected-Mode DOS
might have significantly hurt sales of Windows.  It probably still would,
if promoted right -- Windows is overkill for many single-use and embedded
systems that either never interact with the user (except when being
debugged or power-cycled) or do so primarily through media other than the
PC console (like POS systems).
