um. Slackware ncurses is 1.9.9e; Lynx builds with that version (though I
do not recommend it).  Without a bug report against that configuration, I'm
inclined to think you did not try building it.  (Please try to leave your
biases out of analysis).

The current version of ncurses is 4.2
