I did that,  with Sun's compiler (SunOS math 5.6 Generic sun4u sparc),
for Lynx Version 2.8pre.2 (1998),  with slang,  eanble-nsl-fork,
enable-externals,  and I got
-rwxr-xr-x   1 lahvak   grads     1264560 Mar  4 06:39 lynx

Looks OK to me.
