that message is in ncurses' initscr() function. I assume it's unable
to find the terminfo description for xterm (e.g., the move after 1.9.9e
from /usr/lib/terminfo to /usr/share/terminfo mentioned in my faq might
be biting you).
The current version of ncurses is 4.1
