The problem I have with attempting to work only with patches is that, after
I use them, I never know if problems I have are because the patch failed or
if the version is just bad.  For instance, I never was able to get ac version
55 to configure.  When I finally was able to get back to it, I decided just
to punt and fetch 57's entire archive and start fresh.  That sort of 
configures (see my previous email for the zlib configure problem) and
if I skip the zlib flag, even builds.
