Fote once pointed out all the benefits of zip over tar.gz.  I believe one
was number of supported platforms and another was ease of use.  

Under Win95 I use the same zip/unzip as I do under Linux.  I do NOT use
PK(UN)ZIP.  If you can get past the hangup of pktools starting on a dos
platform...it is really an effective archive tool. 

Oh, I remember another reason, .zip makes it much easier to extract one
file from an archive.
