IntervalBadness and core dumps

I have a large document (60+ pages, large encapsulated postcript images)
whose formatting terminates on the second run with

internal error: assert failed in SetIntervalBadness: badness < 0!
Abort (core dumped)

I have had this problem on and off for quite a while, usually appearing
on the fourth or fifth run. Earlier I was able to get rid of it by
deleting the .li and .ld files generated by Lout and starting over. Now
after some changes to the document source files, I cannot get past the
second run (the document is nowhere near converged). I'm getting no other
error messages, so I have no idea what is going on. I'm using 3.21 on Irix
and Linux.
