To stimulate your interest, here is some -p output from my
private current version of Lout:

I'm still working in raw Lout, not @Tab yet; the input that
produced this was

where @Page is just widths and margins, and @Thing is the
paragraph you can see. Keep those suggestions for @Tab
rolling in. Yes, there will be vertical spanning, and
combined horizontal and vertical spanning.
