Version 3.10 adds a small extra space between lines when the
gap mode is x, whenever the two lines would otherwise abut
each other.

Version 3.11 refines this by adding the extra space only
when PostScript output is being generated, not plain text.

This explains why Steve Beisner's example has blank lines
for him (he's using 3.10) and none for me (3.11).  In 3.11
there is no need to replace 1fx by 1fo.
