Hello Jeff,

Hello All,

Sorry for this perhaps sad message; I made a post in fr.comp.text.tex
- a french speaking newsgroup dedicated to TeX and LaTeX, but having
occasionnally some articles on other text formatters - in defense
of Lout (versus LaTeX, on PC/Linux).

René Cougnenc <address@hidden>, a competent and respected
French Linux hacker and contributor -he translated the Linux book into
French and typeset it with LaTeX-, wrote in an article on
fr.comp.text.tex dated 18 Jan 1996 12:17:44 GMT; I'm adding my poor
translation (in ## prefix) from french into english (and CC-ed to him,
in case I mistranslated his words). René has many interesting posts,
and I feel his critics are deserved. His postings are never excessive.

Again, my translation is approximate - I'm not a professionnal
translator, I'm not looking each other word in a dictionnary, and my
native tongue is French, not English. I may have left some familiar
(or slang) french expressions but I tried to keep the overall
meaning and tone. I (Basile) added sometimes my comments or explanations in
double brackets [[like this]]. I'm citing most of René's message,
alternating the original untouched french paragraph followed by my
poor man's translation. Of course, this message use Iso-Latin-1
encoding.

[[René is using Lout 3.06]]

################# start of René message citation and translation.

## I tried out Lout the other day, just to have a look.

## The whole package is very easily compiled and installed. This
## changes from TeX and related stuff. Documentation is abundant, know
## about several languages including French, handles ISO-Latin-1 input
## characters and support color by default.

## I was enthusiastic in discovering that. So, instead of using my
## favorite editor, I put a new toner cartridge in my laser printer and
## printed the whole documentation, binded it, and started to read it.

## All this seemed great, much less complex than TeX, and working
## directly on PostScript output gives all graphical processing possible,
## and this is a big advantage. Lout's syntaxe looks quite heavy and
## strict to me, but I thought, after all, that one could generate it
## from SGML, more practical.

 ai même fait des éloges à certains amis, par courrier électronique;

## Indeed, I thought having found in Lout my dreamed text processor,
## and I even recommended it by email to friends, and I was amazed that
## Lout was so little known.

Puis, je l'ai essayé... Et j'ai vite déchanté :-(

## then I tried it -- and became really disappointed :-(

## I took a few rather long texts, about a dozen pages, then I started
## « lout » tagging them, as if they made a book. For that, I had to
## reduce the paper and text size, otherwise it takes all the A4
## format. It is very easy to find it their documentation, than the
## equivalent fin LaTeX, for a total beginner.

 type d'architecture.

## I didn't took into account execution speed, since I installed it on
## a 386/25MHz. On such a machine, it is bearable.

Mais alors le résultat formaté, quelle horreur !

## but the formatted result, what an horror!

  ## paragraph justification is awfully done: it is horrible to view, some
  ## very big spaces happen here or there, other words are squeezed
  ## elsewhere, holes appears everywhere... I suppose that competing with
  ## TeX is difficult on paragraph and line breaking , but even troff
  ## does sometimes better, so.. :-)

  ## French support is a big rubbish: I won't even talk about hyphenation,
  ## but only about those damned « french guillomots » [[used for short
  ## quotes in French, instead of ``english quotes'']] which has been place
  ## two ro three times at end of line, exactly like this [[see french
  ## original, at end of 2nd line of paragraph]]. When the french-guillomot
  ## quoted expression is in whole, spaces seems random inside, and unequal
  ## on left or right, « like this ». [[ I -Basile- feel guilty on
  ## this, since I contributed in adding French support into Lout...]]

  ## Other punctuation is similarily bad, and has nothing in common
  ## with any typographical rules. The overall document apperence is so bad
  ## that it hurts the eyes.

  ## In lists, Lout added a big centimeter [[i.e. about half an inch]]
  ## between the dash [[French use dashed lists instead of bullet lists]]
  ## and the text, and in that case the text was even more misaligned than
  ## in normal paragraphs. I couldn't find out how to have lists inside
  ## lists [[Apparently, René didn't read about raw lists in section 2.2 of
  ## the user guide. In defense of Lout, they are mentioned, with an
  ## example of a list item containing a list]].

inutilisable pour un document  devant être typographiquement correct ;

## This result disappointed me a lot; this makes this «lout» really
## unusable for a document which should follow typographic conventions
## [[and french rules are a bit different from american typography]], so
## I took back my LaTeX, which is running well, I thanked a lot Knuth and
## Lamport, and drank to their health :-)

######################### end of René's message with my poor translation.

I believe that something should be done about that. And yes,
occasionally, I did encounter the same problems that René
mentions. (but since I'm using Lout for internal reports that nearly
nobody will read, it doesn't matter so much to me). Another point that
René didn't mention is the occasional mishandling of the colon in
French. It should be preceded by a half (i.e. en-) unbreakable
space. Some of the critics can be easily corrected (for instance
french guillomots « and » can be in @OneCol. This means that french
language support should add specific definitions. Other critics (such
as poor hyphenation and justification) are probably harder to
correct.
