In light of this:

the test should be made conditional on the --distribution option
discussed recently. It tests an invariant that is to be enforced
for binary distributions only--but which does not hold for me or
for anyone who just follows the 'INSTALL' instructions, and is
not actually a prerequisite for running lmi successfully.
