Thanks for the pointer. This is what was needed after the xcode 9 upgrade:
   xcode-select --install

But then I'm stuck with nasm.

$ brew install nasm

$ ./prepare.py -f --list-cmake-variables | grep nasm
NASM_PROGRAM:FILEPATH=/usr/local/bin/nasm

$ which nasm
/usr/local/bin/nasm

$ nasm -v
NASM version 0.98.40 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 11) compiled on Aug  7 2017

$ /usr/local/bin/nasm -v
NASM version 2.13.01 compiled on May  2 2017
