I was thinking more along the lines of (note this is NOT TESTED)
phrase = { c f d g }
\relative { \phrase \phrase \phrase }
\relative { \resetRelativeOctave \phrase \resetRelativeOctave \phrase
\resetRelativeOctave \phrase }
