A while back I pushed a branch with python 2.6 based on Jan's upstream, but it got stalled [1]. While not the latest, 2.6 does have a lot of 2/3 compatibility helpers included (from __future__ import ...). I outlined an update plan [2] which obviously "felt in the water" as the Germans say. Maybe there is something to base future efforts upon.
