I've had the problem for quite some time, with different installations of different Linux distros.

Yes, I can reproduce your problem on LibreOffice Writer 4.3.3.2

But the SVG file generated by lilypond seems ok, I don't know why Writer doesn't display it. I tried both A4 and the preview.

Simple test on the command line:

echo -e '\\version "2.18.2"\n{c1}' > svgtest.ly

lilypond -dbackend=svg -dpreview svgtest.ly

inkview svgtest.svg

Don't use eog (Gnome viewer) to see the SVG file. It doesn't seem to work.

After a quick search I found this:
