It actually _is_ possible to modify the control points of individual ties in a TieColumn, so you don't need to use separate voices or change the order of notes.

The attached file shows how it can be done.

The gratuitous parentheses are part of the syntax to allow for altering pieces of broken ties.  (See http://www.mail-archive.com/lilypond-user%40gnu.org/msg89506.html for an example of how to do this.)
