The melody is a different instrument.

Actually, I prefer it to play on the G string with the fourth finger
since I can then already place the barrée (which only needs first and
second finger in the first measure and requires a solid placement for
the bass tone) in leisure rather than both slamming it on (and there was
the suggestion to use hammer-on for the phrasing) _and_ plucking it in
two different places on the beat.  And it allows me to use a
p-m-i-p-m-i-p-m-i plucking technique for the faster of the two runs if I
don't believe in hammering.

Hm.  I'm not convinced so I'll give my guitar a bit of a workout and try
extrapolating to a somewhat better player from there.  Of course,
I can't enforce any particular execution anyway so I'm probably
overthinking this, but I still like not to be absurd.
