I found out that it's easier to write out music in Lilypond by outlining the overall structure of my music (as given in Jim's reply above) using simple bits of notes, testing out the structure then 'fleshing' it out adding other bits and pieces. There's still so much for me to learn (eg. compiling a book of hymns) but for now I'm satisfied in producing single pages of songs. :) For long time users of Lilypond, is there a workflow that you use, or do you use templates when writing/transcribing new music?
I use a program called Frescobaldi, which has a wonderful new score setup tool. The tool asks about things like instruments, lyrics, key, tempo and so on, then generates an outline for you. What you are describing above sounds exactly like this.
Another feature that I really enjoy, is that you can polish a piece so that it is exactly what you want, then save a cut down version as a template. Next tine you do a similar piece, you can create "New from template". This means you can build up a library of templates for different purposes, so all your hymns could start from a common template, other SATB pieces could use a different one.
Hope that helps! Colin --Sometimes the thoughts in my head get so bored they go out for a stroll through my mouth. This is rarely a good thing.
