unmetered "time signature"

Hi,

In unmetered/ cadenza-style passages one often finds a time signature in 
the form of an 'X'. I'm sure I've seen this in the lilypond 
documentation but don't seem to be able to find it. Can anyone point me 
to the relevant page?
