The input files are expected to be in UTF-8 encoding. From the error
messages, it sounds as though your ö is not encoded that way.
What program are you using to edit the LilyPond input?
If you’re on a UNIXy system, try running the “file” command on your
input; that should tell you what encoding the file is in.
