I run Lily from the command line in XDarwin and I do exactly what
Gilles said and it works fine here. Since the errors are clearly
output to stderr I don't see how if you do the following:
lilypond test1.ly 2> err.txt
you get the error messages on the command line.
I'd be glad to follow this farther if you want.
