How to print a longa with \note?

I'm trying to create a non-standard tempo markup with a longa (or a breve), so 
I try to print it out with \note. However, the following does not work and 
simply fail:
    \note #"\longa" #UP
So, how can I print out a longa note in a markup?

In standard tempo marks, i.e. \tempo \longa=100, everything works just fine, 
btw.
