Don't you have to specify a tempo? (not sure what happens if you don't)

  \midi {\tempo 4 = 60}

This depends on which version you use. In the 2.10.x series, you should NOT
include a tempo indication in the midi block, since the midi tempo is
now taken from the general tempo indications in the score.

But, if you want to specify the tempo of the MIDI file, but do not want
any printed metronome marks in the printed score, you should
indeed include the tempo indication in the \midi block, it's just
that the syntax has changed. See the section on "Creating MIDI files"
in the manual.
