Please do so; I'm sure they had a reason for the change.  At the very 
least, posting on the -devel list will get your fix included sooner.

I believe that guile 1.6.7 is still usable.

To get lilypond to recognize guile-configure, I declare the following 
environment variable:  (on OSX)

export GUILE-CONFIG=/sw/bin/guile-1.6-config

A similar command may help with Thomas' problem.
