Windows Install, ly2dvi -p (small p), fonts problem.

From: Daniel Côté
Subject: Windows Install, ly2dvi -p (small p), fonts problem.
Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 21:15:15 -0400

Has anyone met with the following problem:

::= You install (PC Win XP) from cygwin.com (lilypond 1.6.0), you take care
of the
ghostscript (lilypond install bug report) problem described earlier in the
archives.
Then you do (small p option):

$  ly2dvi -p header.ly

let us say, and you get program readable header.ps and header.pdf, but they
contain
_no text_...

If yes, and if you have a fix (or a work-around), I would be interested...

I know that there is at least one on this list that reported the problem
(Installation
report on cygwin+lilypond 8/25-26/02), but I am unaware of any response to
it. Should we try for the Cygwin list???

Note that I know that the big P option (i.e. ly2dvi -P header.ly) will work
and give
a header.ps _with_ the text. I can then read this header.ps in GSView 4.3
and
convert to PDF from there (this is my current work-around to get PDF),
but...

I am appending some transcript output with comments for those who know more
about the internals and to whom it may mean something...

#
# *** Same as previous, but with --verbose option set.
#
# You will notice that latex complains of Underfull \hbox and Overfull
\vbox
# but I do not know if this is really important (not a savy TeX user here).
#
# What seems to be the culprit however is that in the dvips invocation,
# (towards the end of the listing),
# mktexpk complains that ljfour mode is incompatible with 8000 resolution.
# It then goes on to complain that it cannot guess the mode to use for
# 8000 dpi resolution, and abandons the job. Then dvips complains that
# it cannot find the font (consistent again), and that consequently the
text
# will appear as blanked (which indeed is what is happening)... All fonts
# beget the same treatment.
#
# Option -Ppdf directs mktexpk to use config.pdf which contains a
# directive for default resolution of 8000 dpi, which is consistent with
the
# output below.
#
# Is that really intended this way???
#
# This can be a pointer to an installation problem, or a bug, but I do
# not have necessary background to know what is a normal error
# output (one that can be neglected during dev.), and a bug (not an expert
unix
# user either).
#
# If anyone has had this problem and know of a fix or work-around,
# please advise.
#
# Thank you!
