If you think that Lilypond gives too wide spacing, please send
an example to the list so the problem can be solved.
However, if you want to tweak the default layout yourself, 
you could try some different options:

- Simply use a smaller size: \include "paper16.ly"
- Try to tweak some of the properties of the SpacingSpanner,
  see the on-line documentation of the Lilypond internals.
- Change the default linewidth.
