I don't know the context and scheme, but I would expect that %.1f in ("compressing over-full page by %.1f staff-spaces", overflow)renders the float value ‘overflow’ as a string with one digit after thepoint. E.g. 1.234567 becomes "1.2".
Actually I missed the dot between % and 1 because my po editor uses a similar dot to show the spaces.
