I'll bet Apple would happily give you an idea of the size of the market for
music apps, but it's a broad category covering everything from training/
education apps to toy pianos to sophisticated synths & sequencers. As
one data point, I've spent somewhere around $30 for music apps on
iPhone and now iPad: synths, a little metronome app, and a control
surface to link to a DAW via WiFi.
On the subject of iPad, I'm playing with one now and am convinced one
could build an absolutely killer engraving app for it...
