FWIW, I fully second Mark suggestion. I've always specified the
starting pitch as argument of \relative since I had a few weeks of
experience, just because it saved me from computing the distance of the
starting pitch to nearest C — I don't see in my mind the octave
specification as associated to its C, but rather see the octave range on
the staff.
