Yes, I had changed that to define-public, before I did my tests. The problem 
was that I used use-module, which returned an error (since I misspelled it)..

It worked as soon as I used use-modules...

is it okay to change note-name->lily-string (and octave->lily-string) to 
define-public instead, so e.g. debugging statements can print out the human-
readable pitch name?
