I had a brief look at this, but I am missing something.  How do the
char metrics go into mf2pt1?  Specifically: how does the negative
width of the bbox enter the pfb file? Currently, mftrace reads them
from an AFM file, which is generated from the log files.

  stepmake/stepmake/metafont-*.make

for make file rules involved.
