Yes, I agree.  But I think we can explain that when we get to octave
entry, and should fake it in the first few snippets.

I disagree; faking snippets is what started the whole thing. I think we should simply not explain it for the first few snippets (ie the "here's how to use lilypad" stuff), and explain it in 2.2.

Beginners need to learn about \relative somewhere in the tutorial; in the long run, it doesn't matter if that happens after they learn \clef or before they learn durations. In the short run, explaining \relative sooner avoids potential confusion.
