I can appreciate that, it's why we have gub builds, although I agree that
osx 10.2 isn't supported by them
(we could try supporting it, though - if the SDK is available in neatly packaged
form).
Our major problem with people who self-compile is that
- they usually don't manage (unless they have a really recent setup)
- they don't fix all of the dependencies (older GSes being notable for having
several bugs)
As for getopt,
ftp://ftp.uk.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/local-distfiles/lioux/libgnugetopt-1.3.tar.bz2
has a GNU getopt package which could be put into git, integrated.
