Well, I used boxed rehearsal number, and the behaviour you've just
described is exactly what I want.  Due to the boxes the marks are
sufficiently pronounced.

Yep.

I don't understand this but it sounds great :-) Actually, I'm *very*
pleased with the default positioning of lilypond -- it's worth to name
it `lilypond 3' IMHO -- and I'm already going into the very (nasty)
details.  Good work, indeed!
