Well, how about complicating the scm code instead? If you say that this is not possible with other notation fonts, is there a way to use this feature only on those fonts where it will work? So that there is no need to specify options? Because make no mistake: this does not sound like a decision we can expect a lot of users to make informedly.

I think we should remove the use of three encodings/subsets of emmentaler fonts from our postscript code and use CID versions of the emmentaler fonts combined with the Identity-H CMap instead.

Attached is a patch that implements (and uses) this enhancement:

Only a proof of concept, not ready for release, definitely not for lilypond 2.20.
