I looked at the workaround, and I think there's a separate issue which is  
to do with the reason for the ligature.

I you want a ligature to connect the notes, a slope is needed (or at least  
preferable) where the notes are at different pitches. If (as I do) you want  
the ligature to indicate a hemiola, horizontal lines are best, and they  
should all be at the same height. This may need a new syntax item to  
indicate what's needed, though. So this is an enhancement request as well  
as a bug report!
