I think adding ":lang=ru" would already rule out those missing the cyrillic  
characters. Can you try?
fc-list "Century Schoolbook L:foundry=urw:fontformat=Type 1:lang=ru" file
If that works, then "just" taking the first result from fc-list should be  
fine.
