New issue 3173 by address@hidden: beam thickness should depend on line thickness
http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=3173

Currently beam thickness is defined in terms of staffspace only. That gives unsatisfactory results.

Staffline thickness (measured relative to staff height) changes with staff size (it gets relatively thicker with smaller staff sizes), while beam thickness does not change (because it's defined in staffspaces). This leads to poor results: for staff-size 20 beamThickness/stafflineThickness ratio is 4.8, while for staff-size 10 it's only 2.9 - beams in small sizes appear thin.

In other words, "optical sizing" (described here http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.17/Documentation/essay/engraving-details#optical-sizing) doesn't work for beam thickness.
